Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate is a specialized ingredient known for its bond-building capabilities, particularly in hair care. It works by repairing and protecting the disulfide bonds in hair that are damaged by chemical, thermal, and mechanical stresses.
Hair consists of many long protein chains composed of amino acid building blocks. These chains are bound to each other via hydrogen bonding, salt bridges, and disulfide bonds.
Slightly alkaline pH, heating, bleaching, chemical treatments, reducing agents such as ammonium thioglycolate used for hair waving and straightening, break disulfide bonds in the hair.
